Lehighton Heritage Alliance meets Monday

A group determined to preserve the history of Lehighton has invited neighboring municipalities to learn more about its mission.

Todd Weaver, president of the Lehighton Area Heritage Alliance, told Mahoning Township supervisors on Wednesday that the alliance will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the Lehighton Rec Center.

Weaver said the alliance began right after Lehighton’s 150th anniversary, with the intent to build on people’s enthusiasm to preserve the history of Lehighton.

He said that the group doesn’t just think of the borough, but all of the area that comprise the Lehighton Area School District.

Weaver said Friday, “Each township has a unique history all to its own, and we want to make sure that is kept and preserved, and that generations that come after us get to know it.”

He added, “ I think in the area we have one of the more historical and unique stories to tell.”

Essentially, Weaver said the alliance is all about “trying to promote and preserve history and pass it on.”

Weaver said that the Lehighton Haunted History Ghost Walks will take place at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26-28

He also noted that recently, the group launched the Explore Lehighton Walking Tour on the PocketSights app.

With the PocketSights Tour Guide App (https://pocketsights.com/tour-guide-app), anyone can set up a free account and create a tour, or set up a paid subscription for more features. There is even a “Pizza & Pierogi Tour” in Hazleton.

Anyone can access the tour from their smartphone by downloading the free “PocketSights Tour Guide” app. It’s available for both iPhone and Android devices.

Weaver said that the group eventually plans to display its historic memorabilia, as the majority of its collection is housed at the Borough Annex (old high school) on Third Street.

The alliance meets monthly at various locations around town. To get involved, email lehightonheritage@gmail.com to join the email list for upcoming meetings.

The mission of the Lehighton Area Heritage Alliance is to identify, preserve, promote, and educate the public about the historical legacy of Lehighton and the surrounding area.

It is a small group of volunteers committed to collecting stories and artifacts to safeguard them for future generations. The alliance is working toward creating an accessible public space for a heritage center museum to provide educational exhibits and programs.
