Lansford evicting borough tenant from former Silberline buildings

Lansford Borough Council on Wednesday voted to evict a local business from the former Silberline buildings the borough owns along Dock Street.

“I’m asking for a motion from council to evict Construction Clearance from the three properties he’s renting from the borough,” Solicitor Robert Yurchak said during his report.

Council voted unanimously to evict the business with council members Gwyneth Collevechio and Jay Doyle absent.

There was no further discussion on the move during the meeting.

Afterward, Council President Bruce Markovich said there are three buildings that Construction Clearance rents from the borough.

“They’re supposed to pay us $52,000 a year and they’ve been reducing their payments to us,” Markovich said.

The business claimed there has been water in the buildings, as a reason for the reduction in rent, and they wanted their rental payments placed in escrow, he said.

Markovich explained Construction Clearance was aware that there was a water situation in the buildings when they leased them. The buildings were leased “as is,” Markovich said.

Construction Clearance also claimed that people have been breaking into the buildings, he said.

“But that’s their responsibility to secure the buildings, not ours,” Markovich said.

Construction Clearance, which operates a retail store for home building supplies and other merchandise in the former Panther Valley Lumber building on Riley Street, stores inventory for its business and auctions in the Silberline properties.

A sign along Dock Street identifies one of the buildings as Warehouse #1 and the pickup location for the Construction Clearance online auctions.

Markovich said Construction Clearance has been leasing the buildings for about two years, and was about two months behind on its rent to the borough.

The borough will file eviction papers with District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, Yurchak said.
