A record crowd estimated to be more than 5,000 people lined the streets of New Columbus today as the tiny community celebrated its 31st annual “Shower of Roses.”

The religious festival closed out a three-day program held by parishioners of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in honor of St. Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus in Catholic doctrine.

Mario Sforza served as general chairman of the activities, which included the crowning of Mary Ann Logan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Logan of 1 W. Garibaldi Ave., New Columbus, a sophomore at Marian High School, as the Rose Queen following a parade in which more than 1,000 persons processed.
