Nesquehoning preparing for Veterans Day parade

Nesquehoning officials are working to make sure the annual Carbon County Veterans Day parade goes off without a hitch.

Last week, borough council members spoke about what needs to be done to make sure everything is ready. The Carbon County Veterans Day parade is held in a different municipality annually. This year’s parade is sponsored by the Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 and will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 5.

Council suggested Nesquehoning Hose Company Fire Chief John McArdle and Police Chief Michael Weaver do a drive through of the route to make sure where street barricades are needed, where crossing guards and fire police should be stationed and how traffic should flow during the parade.

McArdle said that in previous years when Nesquehoning hosted the parade, officials have worked with other municipalities to obtain enough street barricades.

He also explained that residential traffic will be rerouted off Route 209 (West Catawissa Street) and onto Railroad Street, where traffic will then come down Pine Street and turn onto Center Street and then connect to the east end of town back on Route 209. Traffic coming from Jim Thorpe will be rerouted the opposite direction to make it through town.

In the case of the Route 54/209 intersection, motorists trying to head into town to go to CVS or New Columbus, they will be rerouted onto Railroad Street and then turn onto Allen Street and go straight across to the other side of town.

Commercial traffic will be stopped on the ends of town during the parade and Catawissa Street will be shut down about 15-20 minutes before the parade kicks off and the detour will be implemented, McArdle said.

For those who would like to participate in the event, Councilwoman Lois Kuba said that organizers are still accepting registrations.

According to a letter sent out by the Carbon County Veterans Council, anyone wishing could participant should call Laurel McHugh at 610-657-3926 or Henry Desrosiers at 570-325-3420.

Donations are also being accepted to help defray the cost of the parade and can be made by sending a check to Carbon County Veterans Council, c/o Laurel McHugh, 511 E. Patterson St., Lansford, PA 18232.

A raffle at the VFW will also be held. Raffle donations can be dropped off at the Nesquehoning VFW or by calling 570-249-4841 to arrange pickup.
