Local Roundup: Results from Oct. 5
Jim Thorpe recorded victories in volleyball and girls soccer on Thursday, while Sydney Frantz had a big game for the Palmerton field hockey team.
VOLLEYBALL
Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove
Brooke Mitzen and Maggy Hallihan sparked Jim Thorpe to a 25-11, 25-16, 25-16 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.
Mitzen had 14 kills, eight service points, and four digs, while Hallihan added 34 assists, 12 service points, six aces, four digs, one kill. Also playing well for the Olympians (12-2 overall; 9-2 league) were Brianna Snisky (eight kills, six service points, four aces and three digs); JaeLynn Browdy (11 service points, seven kills, seven digs and two aces); Kelsey Patton (six kills); and Olivia Calcano (11 digs).
Palmerton-Stroudsburg
Stroudsburg edged Palmerton, 25-15, 15-25, 25-17, 25-27, 15-11 in a non-league match.
The Mountaineers improved their record to 6-12, while the Blue Bombers suffered their 10th straight defeat and fell to 3-17.
Palmerton was paced by Claire Thomas, who had six kills. Emily Christopher added seven digs, and Sadie Gair chipped in with 16 assists.
Lourdes-Tamaqua
Lourdes held on for a 25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 15-12 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.
Gabby Blasko led the Blue Raiders with seven kills. She also had eight digs.
Also playing well for Tamaqua (4-14 overall, 0-12 league) were Sarah Coccio (six aces, six kills); Madison Schock (six aces, six digs, 16 assists, two kills); Leah Black (five aces, 15 digs, three assists, five kills); Destini Denning (nine digs); and Lacey Beers (two aces, 18 digs).
FIELD HOCKEY
No. Lehigh-Palmerton
Sydney Frantz had five goals and an assist to propel Palmerton to a 9-0 Colonial League victory over visiting Northern Lehigh.
Tessa Sander added two goals for the Bombers (10-4 overall; 9-3 CL), while Skylar Kohler and Celeste Hoffman both posted single scores. Mackenzie Long was credited with an assist.
Bomber goalie Sarah Sabo recorded four saves to secure the shutout win.
Northern Lehigh slipped to 1-15 overall, and 1-12 in the league.
Catasauqua-Northwestern
Cara Thomas and Olivia Costa both tallied two goals to lead Northwestern to a 6-1 Colonial League rout of Catasauqua.
Carsyn Van Norman and Hannah Gober both added single goals for the Tigers, who raised their record to 12-3.
Abby Antipas scored for Catasauqua, which dropped to 7-8.
GIRLS SOCCER
Jim Thorpe-Marian
Six second-half goals helped Jim Thorpe roll to a 9-0 Schuylkill League win over Marian.
Sarah Hartman, Kayla Mannino and Makayla Eberly all scored two goals for the Olympians (4-9 overall; 2-7 league). Haylee Fischi, Ella Cook and Olivia Rosenberger all chipped in one.
Maddison Kattner made 32 saves for the Fillies (2-13; 0-11).
Saucon Valley-No. Lehigh
Tesia Mikuta was unstoppable as Saucon Valley knocked off Northern Lehigh for a 6-3 Colonial League win.
Mikuta scored all six goals for the Panthers (10-3 overall; 10-2 CL), while Elliot Policare had five assists.
Victoria Hanna, Katelyn Barthold and Mikayla Gordon scored for the Bulldogs, who fell to 9-5 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Bulldog goalie Dekotah Barthold had 14 saves, while Saucon keeper Sarah Deibert finished with 11 saves.
Blue Mountain-Tamaqua
Sophia Chipriano scored two goals to help Blue Mountain to a 4-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.
Kylie Conway and Hailey Scheuer also recorded goals for Blue Mountain (10-3).
Cecelia Ulicny had 18 saves for Tamaqua (10-7).
Pleasant Valley-ACC
Unbeaten Allentown Central Catholic rolled to a 6-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.
Charlotte Patterson and Sammy Roth both had two goals for the Vikettes (14-0-1 overall; 13-0-1 EPC).
Goalie Sadie Rizzo had 28 saves for the Bears (6-9; 5-8).
BOYS SOCCER
Pine Grove-Lehighton
Pine Grove blanked Lehighton, 2-0, in Schuylkill League action.
The Cardinals (11-4 overall; 8-2 league) received goals from Chase Sarge and Blake Ludwig.
With the loss, Lehighton fell to 8-7-1 overall and 4-6 league.
Tamaqua-Blue Mountain
Blue Mountain stayed unbeaten in Schuylkill League play with an 11-0 win over Tamaqua.
Ryan Mundy paced the Eagles (12-2 overall; 9-0 league) with four goals. Reese Baldwin chipped in three goals and an assist; Dylan Knittle added two goals and two assists; and Robert Antonini and Colton Leibold each had one goal.
Kevin Bazan finished with 16 saves for the Raiders (5-10; 2-8).
Weatherly-Williams Valley
Williams Valley edged Weatherly, 3-2, in Schuylkill League play.
Trent Higgins and Alex Rosenlund scored goals for Weatherly, which remained winless at 0-11 overall and 0-9 in the league.
Williams Valley improved to 6-9 overall, and 5-5 in the league.
Catasauqua-No. Lehigh
In a completion of a suspended game that extended into an overtime period, Catasauqua escaped with a 2-1 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.
With 20 seconds left in the second half, the Bulldogs’ Ethan Moore scored on a penalty kick to send the game into OT.
Jimmy Stock made eight saves for the Bulldogs, who fell to 5-9-1 overall and 2-8-1 in the league.
