Tortoise on the ‘lam’ found in Carbon Co.

A Sulcata turtle that had been on the loose for over a week after it escaped from an animal hospital in the Mahoning Valley has been located.

The Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital posted on its Facebook page Monday afternoon that Tank the Tortoise has been found.

As part of its post, the animal hospital said it’s thankful “to the Lusch family for being on the lookout and letting us know his whereabouts. We are still scratching our heads as to why he always takes shelter at your home when he decides to go on a stroll.”

Megan McFarland, a certified veterinary technician at the animal hospital at 2967 Blakeslee Blvd. West, Andreas, said Tank was found around 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of Winter Mountain and Cold Springs Road, ironically across the street from where he was found last year.

McFarland said Tank’s “not very happy that he’s back home. I think he enjoyed going on his little adventure, but he’s otherwise happy, healthy, and going back into his little enclosure for the winter.

“We’re happy that they called in and let us know where he was at, and ironically he was found pretty much in the same space that he found last year,” McFarland said. “We were all very happy and all very relieved.”

Tank had been missing since he escaped his enclosure on the property of the Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital.

McFarland said the Sulcata is the third-largest species of tortoise in the world and weighs about 50 pounds.

She said this was the third time he’s gotten free, and added he continuously rammed the gate until he got some of the chain links unlinked and he pushed his way through.
