Palmerton couple asks why borough limits truck parking

A Palmerton couple is miffed that truck drivers are no longer permitted to park their vehicles at the borough garage.

Joe Federanich asked borough council on Thursday if they were aware of the sign that’s been put up at the location on Third Street.

Federanich said that past practice was that truck drivers were allowed to park there, and now they won’t be able to.

Borough Manager Autumn Canfield said she believes it’s “against borough regulations.”

“I believe it’s something to do with the size, and also we were trying to deter our parking lot from turning into a tractor trailer parking lot,” Canfield said. “It was getting a little bit out of hand.”

Canfield added she believes that if there’s room on a person’s property, they’re allowed to park on a property.

However, Federanich said, “I think you’re making a big mistake.”

Canfield told Federanich there isn’t much the borough can do.

“Unfortunately, we can’t discriminate,” she said. “We can’t pick and choose who we allow (to park there).”

Borough police Chief Tim Kromer said that all borough-owned lots are restricted.

Kromer said there had been an issue with trailers being parked there and not moving.

Federanich told council he believes that if it has a problem with an individual, they should address it with that individual.

Canfield said the borough cannot say to one person they can’t park there and then allow someone else to.

Marj Federanich told council it was their son, and now he can’t park there.

“I just don’t see the vision of this town,” Marj Federanich said. “Every time something is brought to this borough, (they just shoot it down);

“It’s a real pity; this is a lovely town, but you’re stagnant. I’ve talked to a lot of people, and they’re all fed up with the people of this council.”

Resident Raberta Hans sided with the Federanichs.

“There’s no place for us to park,” Hans said. “There’s no room; so as a council, why are you not looking into (the matter)?”

Councilman Andrew Hollywood told the Federaniches, “There are things that you do that don’t get done.”

Joe Federanich clearly took exception with Hollywood’s remark, and said that he’s followed through with every project that he’s ever come to council with.
