Fire hits home again in East Penn Township
A home that was previously damaged by an arsonist several years ago burned again Saturday in East Penn Township.
Township fire Chief Brenden McArdle said firefighters were dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. to the structure at 762 West Sunset Road.
McArdle said the vacant structure was fully involved when they arrived.
McArdle said firefighters performed all exterior operations as part of an offensive attack, and noted they put down about 2,000 feet of supply hose.
“It was in a remote area, a single lane dead-end road,” McArdle said. “Water had to be hauled from the Lehigh River out to the fire.”
McArdle said there were no injuries reported, and that the fire was under control in less than hour.
“The biggest hindrance was trying to do everything from the outside, as the floors had been burned through previously,” he said. “It wasn’t safe to enter the building.”
McArdle said the fire is suspicious, and added it’s under investigation by a state police fire marshal.
He said firefighters remained on scene until around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
McArdle said also assisting on scene were the Bowmanstown Fire Department, Parryville Fire Department, Palmerton Fire Department, Aquashicola Fire Department, Franklin Township Fire Department, Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport’s RIT Team, and Palmerton Ambulance.
“The biggest thing would be thank all the neighboring departments that came, not only to help with extinguishing the fire, but also getting everything back in service,” he said. “I think that was a lot to ask all those different companies to come out and do it.”
Daniel Crum, formerly of Weissport, was previously charged with intentionally setting a fire at the home in early 2020.
Crum, then 49, admitted in Carbon County court to setting the home on fire in East Penn Township earlier that year.
Crum pleaded guilty before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to one count each of reckless burning or exploding - places uninhabited or unoccupied structure, criminal mischief, both felony 3 counts and theft, a misdemeanor. In exchange for the plea, the district attorney’s office dropped 11 other charges.
