Schuylkill society events

The Schuylkill County Historical Society has several upcoming events.

• Reading Deputy Fire Chief and local historian Michael Glore on Saturday will discuss downtown Pottsville fires on a walking tour.

The tour will start at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville, at 9:30 a.m. Reservations are required. The rain date is Sept. 30.

• Mining engineers David Williams and John R. Ackerman, author of “Inclined Planes in Pennsylvania Anthracite,” will discuss local coal planes, engineering marvels that allowed railroads to move coal from the valleys over mountains to canals and later to other railroads, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27, at the historical society.

For fee information and reservations, which are required, call the society.

• The Local Reads book club will discuss “Billy. We Hardly Knew Ya” at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28, at the historical society. The new book by Vincent Genovese, tells the story of a Minersville High School football player Billy Ulmer who died during a game in 1943.

• Wyoming Valley Ghost Tours is conducting a paranormal investigation at the historical society on Sept. 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on Wyoming Valley Ghost Tours’ Facebook page. Before ordering, society members should call 570-622-7540 for a discount coupon.
