Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 16

Tamaqua’s cross country squads both earned team titles at the Cardinal Clash Invitational on Saturday.

Northwestern, meanwhile, posted wins in three sports - boys and girls soccer, and volleyball.

BOYS SOCCER

Southern Lehigh-Northwestern

Caelan Stangil had a hat trick to help Northwestern roll to a 7-0 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

The Tigers, who remained undefeated at 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the league, also received two goals and a pair of assists from Matt Johnson.

Jacob van Lierop added a goal and two helpers, while Jack Mauro contributed a goal and an assist. Isaac Frey chipped in with an assist.

The shutout was the eighth on the season for Northwestern.

Palmerton-Bangor

Bangor’s Kaden Graziano scored the game’s only goal to give the Slaters a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Erik Kierman assisted on the lone tally, which helped Bangor improve to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the league.

The loss dropped the Blue Bombers to 3-7 and 1-5.

GIRLS SOCCER

Shenandoah Valley-Marian

Marian picked up its first win of the season by posting a 3-0 shutout over Shenandoah Valley.

Lizzie Pikitus had two goals for the Fillies, who upped their mark to 1-7.

Kassandra Hibler also tallied for the winners, who received 13 saves in goal from Maddie Kattner.

Tamaqua-Northern Lehigh

Northern Lehigh’s Katelyn Barthold scored a second-half goal to break a tie and lift the Bulldogs to a 2-1 non-league victory over Tamaqua.

Barthold recorded the go-ahead and game-winning tally during a scramble in front of the net at the 18:18 mark.

Mikayla Gordon gave Nolehi an early lead with a goal off a header, but the Raiders’ Ava Agosti knotted the score - also on a header.

The Bulldogs’ Dekota Barthold made six saves, while Tamaqua’s Cecelia Ulicny made four stops. The Raiders’ Kimmy Rudy assisted on Agosti’s goal.

The win lifts Nolehi to 6-1, while Tamaqua slips to 4-2.

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Kherington Yezik scored with six seconds left in regulation to lift Northwestern to a 2-1 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Sophia Schaffer also scored for the Tigers, who remained unbeaten at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the league. Paige Bissell added an assist.

For the Spartans (5-4; 2-2), Haley Fluck scored her team’s only goal.

Bangor-Palmerton

Nataly Walters scored four goals to power Palmerton to a 9-0 Colonial League victory over Bangor.

The winners, who led 5-0 by halftime, also received a pair of goals from both Hannah Barry and Hadlee Lake.

Ella Baumgardt finished with a goal and two assists for the Blue Bombers, while Riley Gerhard contributed a pair of helpers. Aubrey Frable also chipped in with an assist.

Palmerton keeper Emma Snyder made two saves to earn the shutout.

The Bombers upped their mark to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the league, while the Slaters dipped to 2-7-1 and 1-5.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cardinal Clash Invitational

The Tamaqua boys and girls cross country teams both won team titles at the Cardinal Clash Invitational.

The Raider boys had three runners finish in the top-10, with Tony Marchetti leading the way with a fourth place. Levin Kunkel ended in seventh, while Stephen Kieffer crossed in 10th place.

There was almost an identical situation with the Tamaqua girls, as three Raiders ended in the top-10, headed by Alexis Buchala in fourth. Bailey Pliska placed seventh, with Samantha Plasha earning ninth.

FIELD HOCKEY

Salisbury-Lehighton

Gabby Brown scored both Lehighton goals as the Indians earned a 2-1 victory over Salisbury.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the contest on Maya Afifi’s third-quarter tally. Brown knotted the contest in the same quarter, before providing the eventual game-winner in the fourth.

Lehighton goalie Greyson Frey recorded seven saves.

The win lifted the Indians to 6-2, while Salisbury fell to 5-5-1.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Pottsville won both doubles matches to gain a 3-2 victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians (1-8) received a straight-set singles win from No. 1 Ashlynn Miller, while Thorpe’s No. 2 - Keira Reese - pulled out a victory in a tiebreaker.

The win allowed the Tide to improve to 6-5.

Ava Orlowsky/Maggie Colina (P) def. Ada Finsel/Lila Dejessa 6-2, 6-2; Jill Horvath/Meadow Eckert (P) def. Diamond Alvear/Noelanie Sepulveda 6-4, 6-2.

VOLLEYBALL

Lehighton-Northwestern

Northwestern swept Lehighton in non-league volleyball action.

Meg Holman had five kills and two blocks for the Tigers, while Kylie Nagle finished with 46 digs.

The winners, now 4-5, also received 19 assists and two aces from Shannon Green.

The loss dropped the Indians to 6-3.
