Bears breeze

ALLENTOWN - The Pleasant Valley Bears brought the run game in full force against Allen Friday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

Two weeks ago, Pleasant Valley running back Alex Ecker ran for 302 yards against Dieruff at the stadium and against Allen put up respectable numbers on a night where the Bears rushed for 400 yards over the Canaries in a 50-6 victory.

Ecker ran for 199 yards and was pleased to see the whole team getting carries in a lopsided game.

“I got to see my teammates run the ball and have some fun,” Ecker said. “It was nice to see everyone happy. It was great, but it got me more excited to see everyone touch the ball and run for yards today.”

Blake Walters scored two rushing touchdowns for Pleasant Valley, including the first Bears score with 3:57 left in the first half on a four-yard touchdown. Walters ran another touchdown in on the team’s first drive to start the third quarter.

Pleasant Valley steamrolled to another victory to go to 3-1 on the season and the Bears take down another Eastern Pennsylvania Conference opponent on the schedule.

“Allen is a young team with a first-year coach and they really battled,” Pleasant Valley head coach Blaec Saeger said. “I give them a lot of credit. They really hung with us that first half. We were very sloppy, I was not pleased at all. We weren’t ourselves, we were sloppy and I told them here that it’s understandable. Short week, huge emotional win last week, long trip and it happens. I’m very proud of them for the way they bounced back in the second half and did what they had to do.”

The Pleasant Valley defense held the Canaries (0-4) to six points and the Allen offense didn’t going most of the night. Austin Snyder connected with Deklan Schleder for a 42-yard touchdown pass to end the first quarter, but it was the only score of the night for Allen.

“Held another team to six,” Saeger said about the defense. “They are the heart and soul of what we are. We are built to run the ball and play defense. Not everyone likes to play the game that way anymore. I still do, we still do. We will always be able to play defense. We have tough kids and a great D-coordinator in Coach Miller. It’s just part of our DNA.”

Allen’s Lawson Vazquez was the primary runner for the Canaries Friday, gaining 84 yards on 14 carries. Vazquez tried to punch it into the end zone in the fourth quarter, but the PV defense was too tough and stopped him at the 1.

Pleasant Valley sophomore Isaac Westerman got many snaps in the game and also caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Valentino-Byers Robinson to make it 26-6 with 6:15 left until halftime.

A LOT OF RUSHING ... The Pleasant Valley Bears rushed for 400 yards against Allen Friday night at J. Birney Crum stadium and although Ecker was responsible for almost half of the team’s yardage, fellow senior Dakoda Lucas broke away for some good runs, including a 21-yard gain on the first play of the third quarter.

BACK TO THE POCONO TEAMS ... Pleasant Valley travels to East Stroudsburg North next Friday for another Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game and then face Pocono Mountain West at home. PV was able to take down both the Timberwolves and Panthers in play last season.

NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE SCORE ... Pleasant Valley head coach Blaec Saeger wasn’t concerned about the score, but was more worried about how his team played in the first half. “It was very sloppy. You should be happy with 26-6, but nothing against Allen, but it wasn’t us. It wasn’t even the score, I wasn’t real happy. Fumbling and misaligments and we just weren’t all together there in that first half. Credit to the kids, they came out in the second half and did what they had to do.”
