Tamaqua woman naked in street taken to hospital

A Tamaqua woman who was running naked around the borough Monday morning has been charged with assaulting a police officer and other offenses.

According to Tamaqua police, Officer Doug Springer was on his way to work when he spotted the woman, Anita Collins, 35, near the Five Points intersection just before 7 a.m. and contacted police.

After more reports of Collins in the borough, police took her into custody in an empty lot on Route 309 where she got into the back of a police vehicle without incident.

Police said she made several statements that led officers to begin the process of having her committed because of her mental health.

She was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill in Pottsville.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Collins looked straight ahead and did not move, according to police.

Police told her that they had treated her with respect, did not restrain her and got a blanket to cover her, but she refused to move.

As Springer reached for her wrist, Collins punched and kicked him. Police restrained her and took her to a hospital bed, where she started to yell that “this was unfair.” When a nurse asked Collins what was unfair, police said she screamed that the nurse’s conversation with her was unfair. When police asked Collins to calm down, she said she would head butt Springer.

Police charged Collins with aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and open lewdness.
