Lenape Nation hosts pow wow this weekend

The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania invites people to attend the annual pow wow Saturday and Sunday at Mauch Chunk Lake Park on Lentz Trail in Jim Thorpe.

The pow wow is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with grand entry of dancers each day at noon.

Veterans will be honored in the opening ceremony.

The event will include dancing, storytelling, education and audience participation dances.

Dances will include men’s and women’s traditional dances, grass dance, ladies shawl, ladies jingle dress, Eastern war dance and ladies blanket dance.

The head staff for the year includes Barry Lee Christy as emcee and David White Elk Elmore as arena director.

Matt White Eagle Clair will be the men’s lead dancer and Chris Mourning Dove Clair as women’ lead dancer.

Head Veterans flag bearers are Richard Quite Hawk Welker, Vietnam Navy Corpsman, and Carrie Lewis (USMC). Invited host drums are Gray Cloud Singers, Medicine Horse, Red Storm Singers, Stoney’s Boys,

Mwenkanay Kshuwsu Asuwichick and Spirit of The Mountain.

Eastern Woodland Social Dances each day, featuring Iroquios Social Dances And Delaware Stick Dances.

The audience is invited to join in for all intertribal dances.

This event is free. However, donations are greatly appreciated. Donations help cover expenses for dancers and drummers travel. Net proceeds benefit the tribe’s scholarship fund.

The outer circle will feature craft, art, and food vendors.

The pow wow will feature MMIW Memorial Grove, raising awareness to the ongoing crisis affecting indigenous people.

No alcohol or drugs are allowed. Visitors should bring a chair or blanket.

The event is held rain or shine.
