Local Roundup: Results from Aug. 29
Both Northwestern soccer teams posted wins on Tuesday, while Pleasant Valley gained victories in golf and volleyball action.
BOYS SOCCER
Notre Dame GP-Northwestern
Northwestern posted its third straight shutout, blanking Notre Dame of Green Pond in Colonial League action 5-0.
Matt Johnson and Jake Mauro both scored two goals for the Tigers, who improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Jake van Lierop also tallied for Northwestern, which received assists from Issac Frey and Caden Mertz.
Northern Lehigh-Bangor
Northern Lehigh dropped a 3-1 Colonial League decision to Bangor.
The Slaters were led by Marcus Kieranan, who scored two goals. The winners also received a goal from Aiden Lilly.
For the Bulldogs, Logan Berfield provided his team’s only score.
Bangor is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Nolehi drops to 1-1 and 0-1.
Palisades-Palmerton
Palmerton couldn’t muster any offense against Palisades, who earned a 3-0 Colonial League victory.
The Blue Bombers received 10 saves from goalie Ben Andrew.
The loss dropped Palmerton to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The contest was the first of the season for the Pirates.
FIELD HOCKEY
Pleasant Valley-Northampton
Pleasant Valley dropped its season opener as Northampton earned a 6-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.
Grace Roberts had two goals for the Kids, while Kendall Iasiello added a goal and three assists.
The Bears avoided a shutout when Sara Lesnik tallied on a penalty stroke.
Northampton, now 2-0, outshot PV by a 27-4 margin.
GIRLS SOCCER
Lehighton-Tamaqua
Sara Hope scored a pair of goals to help Tamaqua open its season with a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.
Kim Rudy also tallied for the Blue Raiders, who received two assists from Katie Fredericks.
For the Indians, who fell to 0-2, Charli McHugh scored her team’s only goal.
Bangor-Northern Lehigh
Nicole Zarayko and Victoria Hanna both scored two goals to help power Northern Lehigh to a 6-0 Colonial League victory over Bangor.
Zarayko and Hanna also contributed assists for the Bulldogs in their season opener.
The winners (1-0), who held a 15-3 advantage in shots, also received a tally from Gabriella Hanna.
The loss dropped the Slaters to 1-1-1.
Northwestern-Notre Dame GP
Northwestern won its fourth game in five days by posting a 3-1 Colonial League victory over Notre Dame of Green Pond.
Cammy Fitch and Brook Balliet both had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who moved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Syenna Flores also tallied for Northwestern, while Sophia Schaffer added an assist.
Tiger keeper Olivia Reinhart finished with four saves.
Palmerton-Palisades
Palisades received goals from three different players to gain a 3-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.
Amelia Smith, Jenna Magditch and Grace Balsamo all scored for the Pirates, who upped their record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.
The Blue Bombers, who suffered their first loss and are now 3-1, received seven saves from goalie Emma Snyder.
Blue Mountain-Marian
Blue Mountain cruised to an 11-0 win over Marian.
Sophia Spalski scored two goals to lead the Eagles, who are now 1-1.
The contest was the season opener for the Fillies.

Panther Valley went 3-0 in a Schuylkill League quad match, defeating Marian, Pine Grove and Weatherly.
Drew Kokinda paced the Panthers with a 72 to earn medalist honors. Teammate Carson Surotchak contributed an 86.
The Colts, who went 1-2, received a team-best 88 from Sam Farrone.

Lehighton’s Griffin Traylor tied for medalist honors, but it wasn’t enough as the Indians dropped a 356-378 Schuylkill League contest to Blue Mountain.
The Eagles also posted a 356-426 victory over Jim Thorpe.
Traylor and Blue Mountain’s Luke MacDonald both finished with an 84.
The Olympians’ top golfer was Aiden Ramey, who was two strokes back with an 86.
The losses dropped Lehighton to 2-6 and Thorpe to 0-6, while Blue Mountain is now 9-2.

Brooke Mitzen also finished with 11 kills and three aces for the Olympians, who won by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-10 in their season opener.
Also contributing to the victory were Brianna Snisky (six kills, four aces, two blocks), JaeLynn Browdy (eight kills, two aces), Priscilla Patton (six kills) and Olivia Calcaño (two digs, one ace).
Mahanoy Area-Panther Valley
Panther Valley opened Schuylkill League action with a 25-11, 25-11, 25-19 victory over Mahanoy Area.
Riley McArdle led the way for the Panthers (1-0 overall; 1-0 league) with 13 kills and an ace.
The winners also received four kills and three blocks from Maddison Maynard, and nine aces and five kills from Emma Dacey.
Pleasant Valley-ES South
Pleasant Valley cruised to a 25-7, 25-6, 25-4 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference sweep of East Stroudsburg South in its season opener.
Lexi Womack had 11 kills, three aces and two digs to lead the Bears, while Brianna Bruckman added 18 assists and five digs.
PV also received six kills, four aces, two blocks, and a dig from Rylee Ruggiero. Hannah Akob, meanwhile, contributed six kills, five digs, and a block.
Governor Mifflin-Northwestern
Northwestern fell to Governor Mifflin 3-1 in non-conference action.
Kylie Nagle collected 28 digs and four aces for the Tigers, who fell to 1-1.
Northwestern’s Bailey Murray finished with 12 kills, while Shannon Green added 31 assists and two aces.
Weatherly-Shenandoah Valley
Shenandoah Valley pulled out a 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.
Kelly Reiner had three kills and two aces for the Wreckers, while Taylor Davidovich collected two digs and two kills.
The loss dropped Weatherly to 0-2, although the Wreckers did capture the JV contest 2-1.
