Local roundup: Results from Aug. 25
The Northwestern boys and girls soccer and field hockey teams each opened the season with a victory on Friday.
Pleasant Valley’s girls soccer and Northern Lehigh’s boys soccer teams also secured season-opening triumphs.
BOYS SOCCER
Pennsbury-Northwestern
Defending PIAA Class 2A champion Northwestern opened the 2023 campaign with a 2-0 non-league victory over visiting Pennsbury.
Jack Mauro and Matt Johnson scored for the Tigers (1-0), while Brandon Krapf finished with four saves.
Northern Lehigh-NDES
Freshman Kellen Bauer scored twice and Northern Lehigh picked up a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame East Stroudsburg.
Junior Mike Wilk also scored for the Bulldogs, and senior Jimmy Stokes made 12 saves to earn his first shutout and win.
GIRLS SOCCER
Northwestern-
Scranton Prep
Sophia Schaffer and Brook Balliet each scored a pair of goals and Northwestern cruised to a 10-0 non-league win over Scranton Prep.
Camryn Fitch, Katie Brensinger, Kherington Yezik, Jayden Gillette, Amelia Glassberg and Juliet Benvin also scored for the four-time defending District 11 schampion Tigers (1-0).
Schaffer also had four assists, while Fitch, Balliet, Yezik, Paige Bissell and Dyland Ritter also had one assist in the win.
Freedom-Pleasant Valley
Aryn Stivala’s second goal of the game lifted Pleasant Valley to a 2-1 overtime win over Freedom in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.
Stivala scored on a header off a cross from Peyton Foder to help the Bears (1-0) win their season opener. Sadie Rizzo made 15 saves in the victory.
Grace Burke scored for the Patriots (0-1).
FIELD HOCKEY
Moravian-Northwestern
Cara Thomas recorded a hat trick to lead Northwestern to a 4-1 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.
Thomas opened the scoring in the third period for the Tigers (1-0), who trailed 1-0 at halftime. She added another score before the end of the period to put Northwestern up 2-1. Carsyn Van Norman scored on an assist from Amelia Birch midway through the fourth and assisted on the final goal from Thomas to make it 4-1.
Grayson Domzalsk scored in the second period for the Lions (0-1).
Southern Lehigh-Palmerton
Riley Bartosz scored twice and Southern Lehigh opened the season with a 3-2 win over Palmerton in Colonial League action.
Sierra Giannattasio also found the back of the cage for the Spartans (1-0), while Delaney Robbins and Reese Macintosh assisted on the Bartosz goals for the defending league champions.
Tessa Sander and Celeste Hoffman scored for the Blue Bombers (0-1).
Salisbury-Northern Lehigh
Salisbury blanked Northern Lehigh for a 3-0 Colonial League win.
Sarah Beckage led the Falcons (1-0) with two goals, while Gwen Defazio also found the back of the cage. Ellie Schneider and Kendra Morgan both had assists in the win.
Daisy Richard finished with five saves for the Bulldogs (0-1).
CROSS COUNTRY
Jim Thorpe, Northern Lehigh, Northwestern, Palmerton
at Lions Invitational
Palmerton’s Connor Hibell ran to a third-place finish with a time of 16:57 at the season-opening Moravian Academy Lions Invitational.
Northwestern’s Xander Giandomenico (18:24) placed 21st in the boys varsity race, while Sophia Cornell finished 28th (23:18) for the Tigers in the girls event.
The Northwestern girls placed second place as a team in the Class 2A division.
The Northern Lehigh girls (Class A), along with the Weatherly boys both placed fourth in their respective Class A divisions, while Northwestern’s boys were fifth in Class 2A.
Weatherly’s Sebastian Williams (30th), Northern Lehigh’s Emma Heil (33rd) and Jim Thorpe’s Aubrey Bonner (38th) all had the top individual finishes for their teams.
GIRLS TENNIS
Emmaus-Pleasant Valley
Emmaus earned its first win of the season thanks to a 7-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.
The Hornets move to 1-2 with the win.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 1-3 overall.

Executive Education Academy Charter School came away with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-19 victory over Weatherly.
Kelly Reiner had eight service points, four digs and three aces for the Wreckers (0-1). Abby Weston added seven service points, three digs and two kills. Rachel Rosenlund had six service points and two digs, and Taylor Davidovich dished out 11 assists in the loss.
