Lehighton removes portable classrooms at middle school

Crews worked this week to remove portable classrooms no longer in use at Lehighton Area Middle School.

The district stopped using the classrooms after fifth grade moved from that building to the new elementary center in 2018.

Lehighton awarded the bid for removal to Bachert Construction in April at a cost of $15,500.

“It was a little bit more complicated than we originally thought because of how they were mounted on the blacktop and some things that were done underneath,” Superintendent Dr. Christina Fish said of the removal work.

Most recently, Lehighton used the modular for storage but sold many of the items in them as surplus several years ago to prepare for their removal.

Fish said after all of the portable classrooms are dismantled and removed, repairs would be required to the blacktop.

“The fence is coming down as well,” she said. “It’s a big safety issue and an eyesore, so it’s great to see this work being done.”
