Tamaqua approves Comcast as a cable TV provider

Tamaqua residents will eventually have a choice when it comes to their cable television provider.

On Tuesday, council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance granting a non-exclusive cable television franchise to Comcast.

Before the vote, Councilwoman Mary Linkevich said she and council members Kathy Kunkel and Robert Amentler met with Comcast representatives.

“They’re interested in bringing their services to Tamaqua. They talked about it and it seemed great,” Linkevich said.

Borough Solicitor Anthony Odorizzi added that he reviewed the agreement.

“So this means that we will have two cable providers in town that people will have a choice to go to: Comcast or Service Electric,” Council President Brian Connely said.

Currently, only Service Electric Cable Television serves the borough.

Linkevich said Comcast will have to run lines through the borough.

“It won’t happen immediately,” she said.

Rush and Schuylkill townships recently approved similar agreements with Comcast. Both communities are also served by Service Electric.
