Lansford councilman charged with assault, jailed

A Lansford councilman faces multiple charges after an assault that sent a man to the hospital with traumatic injuries Wednesday evening, according to court documents.

Jay Doyle, 48, of West Water Street, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment, and jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Doyle is on the Lansford Borough Council.

According to court papers, Lansford police saw a man covered in blood driving on Cortright Street while responding to an active assault in the 300 block of West Water Street at 7:22 p.m.

The man had a traumatic head wound above his left eyebrow in an incident on West Water Street, court papers said. The man was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which resulted in internal bleeding, police said.

Witnesses identified Doyle as the other person involved in the incident and police found Doyle outside his residence.

Doyle told them that the man started it by pushing him and called his daughter a derogatory name, court papers said.

Witnesses in written statements said Doyle struck the man multiple times in the head with his fists and repeatedly kicked him in the head while on the ground, court papers said.

Police obtained video footage showing the man being knocked to the ground and repeatedly struck in the head, court papers said.

Doyle admitted to striking the man in the head with his fists and then kicking him, and Doyle’s right hand was swollen from striking the victim, court papers said.

Doyle in a written statement said that he felt provoked and struck the man, court papers said.

Lansford police said the man was taken to St. Luke’s in Bethlehem, where he is in stable condition.
