Jim Thorpe to repair school roofs

Two upcoming roofing projects in Jim Thorpe Area School District will cost just over $200,000.

Jim Thorpe’s board of directors approved two Weatherproofing Technologies Inc. proposals Wednesday night for a partial high school roof restoration project and the removal and replacement of wet insulation on the L.B. Morris roof. Both projects come to about $205,000.

The L.B. Morris roof was scanned in the spring when two sections, around 100 square feet, were found to be damaged and in need of repair.

“Overall, the condition of the district’s roofs is fair,” Marshal Kiessling, a Tremco Roofing representative, said last month, “but we did find one wet spot at the high school and two at L.B. Morris. One spot was around an HVAC unit at L.B. and another was a puncture right through the roof. It’s small in scope right now but we don’t want that to spread and start multiplying.”

Tremco suggested fixing the wet spots and addressing some wind damage on the high school roof in the current fiscal year.

The high school roof project includes a 15-year warranty for the section that will be restored.

While Wednesday’s vote was unanimous, Board President Scott Pompa cautioned that the projects, along with some other upcoming building and grounds work could put a strain on the district’s capital reserve account.

“This pretty much depletes that account,” Pompa said. “These are much needed projects, but we’ll need to look for ways to get money back into that account.”

Charles Dresher, Jim Thorpe’s building and grounds director, told the board during a committee meeting last week the repairs to the wet insulation and wind-damaged portions of the roofs were of critical importance.

“They really should be done before winter,” Dresher said. “The longer we would put it off, more damage could occur and it would cost more.”

The rest of Tremco’s long-term plan calls for restoring another 37,500-square-foot portion of the high school roof in 2024 at an estimated $875,000, a 33,500-square-foot portion of the L.B. Morris roof in 2025 at $804,000 and a 60,500-square-foot portion of the Penn-Kidder roof in 2026 at a cost of $1.45 million.
