The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating an Aug. 9 explosion and fire at a Tamaqua magnesium facility.
No one was injured in the 9 p.m. incident at Hart Metals on East Broad Street. The facility, which is owned by Luxfer Magtech, was evacuated and suffered minimal damage.
The incident, however, brought emergency responders from two counties and resulted in a 2-plus hour closure of Route 209, which is also East Broad Street.
“I can confirm that OSHA is investigating this incident,” OSHA spokeswoman Leni Fortson said. She noted that the agency has a total of 6 months to conduct its investigation and release its findings.
Initial reports were for a fire involving magnesium that caused a tank to explode. Eight employees were ordered to evacuate.
According to information from the agency, OSHA has jurisdiction over approximately 7 million worksites.
“Investigating a worksite incident - a fatality, injury, illness, or close call - provides employers and workers the opportunity to identify hazards in their operations and shortcomings in their safety and health programs. Most importantly, it enables employers and workers to identify and implement the corrective actions necessary to prevent future incidents,” according to OSHA.
