Donerds Donuts opens Bethlehem location
Donerds Donuts, currently located in Jim Thorpe, opened its first location in Bethlehem on Aug. 2 with a soft opening at 9 a.m. The storefront is located next to Subway at 3 East 4th Street.
The grand opening and ribbon cutting of this new shop was on Aug. 3 with the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. The first 30 people to come in and take a selfie in front of the cartoon wall inside and share it and tag Donerds in your own social media account would get a free doughnut.
Donerds Donuts is known for its fresh, artisan handmade Donuts in flavors such as peanut butter cup (doughnut covered with half chocolate and half peanut butter with peanut butter cups in the center) and blueberry cheesecake covered with blueberry icing). Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds said small business adds vibrancy and recognized the owners for their hard work.
Owner Andy said his favorite doughnut is the Boston Cream.
Owners Annabel Figueroa and Andy Underwood began their business in Chile, where Annabel is from, and the couple met and fell in love there. They started their gourmet doughnut food truck with a VW bus in Santiago according to their website.
The bus is still in Chile, and it’s not used as a food truck anymore. They proudly use the highest quality coffee with beans from La Colombe and Stumptown coffee roasters. They named the shop because they think of themselves as “mad nerd scientists” experimenting to make sure they have the best coffee and doughnuts possible. I wondered if they could have the same name in Spanish. Annabel explained that words, “doughnut” and “nerd” mean the same thing in both languages.
Donerds also does macaroons in flavors such as pistachio, passion fruit and espresso. Info: donerdsdonuts.com.
