Walnutport woman performs ‘Chickfolk’ at Musikfest

A Walnutport woman is bringing her own folk style to Musikfest several times this week.

Cass Miller, whose stage name is Cass Noelle, played her first set Saturday afternoon at Main Street Platz and will appear Thursday and Friday.

Miller has dubbed her music Chickfolk, which she says is a blend of folk, Americana and pop. “I play mostly covers and a few originals,” she said.

“Musikfest is an opportunity to meet people from everywhere,” she said. “It was a blast.”

A lot of people travel from other states just to attend Musikfest.

“It’s great to see faces you’ve never seen before,” Miller said. Despite the hot sun on Saturday, “People stayed. They sat in the sun to listen.”

She plays mostly cover songs, but throws some of her own in there as well.

Fans reacted to her rendition of “Sweet Child of Mine.” Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” is another crowd favorite.

She closes shows with her own song, “Good Night” and said people are starting to sing along to the words. “It’s really cool.”

Miller has been playing guitar for 25 years, starting when she was 12. She’s been walking around singing as long as she can remember.

Her stage career launched in 2017 when she played her first gig in the Bethlehem southside arts district, which she says gave her the freedom and courage to pursue her career.

She credits the Lehigh Valley music scene for encouragement. Many of the musicians attended her performance and she is attending theirs. “Everyone has everyone’s backs,” she said.

She’s a regular at SteelStacks open mic night and can be seen at Radical Winery in Lehighton, Slatington Marketplace and will play Wild Elder summer music series in Jim Thorpe on Aug. 20.

“I’ve always been a creative person,” Miller said. “I love expressing myself to people that way and when people come up to me and say, ‘that song spoke to me” or ‘that song makes me cry.’ ”

Miller, who is divorced and widowed, says, “Music has really helped me get through all of it.”

Now she’s a single mom, with a daughter Joy, 3. “I’m momming and gigging,” she said, adding she is thankful for family support. She also has an art business, Hang a Left, and her works will be at the Palmerton Community Festival.

Miller will play at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cinema in SteelStacks for an intimate performance and in a duo with guitar player Jack Pierone at noon on the Main Street stage.
