Gardening family event Saturday in Schuylkill Co.

The Schuylkill County Master Gardeners are again hosting a family event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the grounds between Schuylkill Haven Penn State Campus and the UCC Church where the Vietnam Memorial and Penn State Masters Gardener Demo Garden are.

The Schuylkill gardeners group will conduct tours of the garden, explaining its purpose and identifying the varieties of plants in the eight varied beds - daylily, natives, butterfly, etc. It is to be a day of education.

Locally grown fresh produce will be available to sample. Produce and flower bouquets, from the group’s garden, will be on sale.

Gardeners’ questions are welcome.

There is a booth for questions and answers as well as Master Gardeners available throughout the grounds. Parking and admission are free.

Schuylkill County Master Gardeners will also provide samples of baked goods that were made with locally grown ingredients like blueberries, rhubarb, zucchini, and lavender. Baked goods are available for purchase along with gardening items including used tools, books, and miscellaneous items.

There will be stations with information on bees, butterflies, lantern flies, vegetables grown above and below ground, and native plants.

Potted native plants and shrubs and other plants will be on sale.

Some of the vendors who will be on site are Uncle Pauls’ Stuffed Pretzels, Mr. Softie and Honey for Heroes. In 2016, Honey for Heroes was created by Blaine Holden, a Coast Guard Vietnam Veteran, and David Rider, who donate proceeds of their sales to various Vietnam Veteran organizations.

The event is rain or shine.
