Night Out bands Lehighton community with first responders

It featured community safety demonstrations, first responders, and the presence of police officers who engaged with the general public.

Combine that with popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy, and games for the kiddos, and it’s no wonder National Night Out in Lehighton was a rousing success.

The Lehighton Borough Police Department hosted the fun-filled community event Tuesday night in the Lower Park and in front of the borough building.

Borough police Chief Joe Sparich said it was nice to see the interaction between the public and the vendors.

“We’re very happy to see the community come out, there’s a lot of kids and families,” Sparich said. “They seem to be enjoying themselves.”

Kaitlin Spayder of Lehighton would certainly vouch for that as she watched as her children, Cian Spayder, 5, and Dillon Spayder, 2, took a tour of the firetruck courtesy of the Mahoning Valley Fire Department.

Tanya Rivera of Lehighton said she was thrilled for her children that they were able to take part in such a worthwhile event.

Jason Rivera, 6, said he was looking forward to going into the bounce house, while his brother, Tyler Rivera, said he wanted to finish his snow cone first.

Scott Gillespie of Lehighton chatted with the vendors as his daughter, Molly Gillespie, 6, of Lehighton, played games and enjoyed her cotton candy.

“She wanted to come down and see what was going on,” Scott Gillespie said.

The Lehighton Downtown Partnership teamed up with the police department to host the event.

Sparich said he was grateful to all the first responders and public agencies who made themselves available to the public.

“It’s a good time for not only the police but also the first responders as well,” he said. “Today is a day for enjoyment, and we get to deal with the people on a more friendly level.”
