State police at Hazleton - crashes

State police at Hazleton reported on several crashes:

• A crash happened at 4:59 p.m. July 13 on the Quakake Road in Packer Township, resulting in suspected serious injuries to the two drivers.

They said Randy R. Kupres, 58, of New Ringgold, and Brandyn R. Smith, 36, of Wilkes-Barre, were transported to the St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale, by the Tamaqua and Lehighton ambulances, respectively.

Police said the crash happened when Kupres was driving a 2007 Ford F-350 westbound at an undetermined rate of speed when he fell asleep. The truck traveled onto the right shoulder where it struck a 2020 Ram Pro Master that was parked off the roadway.

Police said Smith was obtaining cargo from the Pro Master at the time and was struck by the vehicle, which traveled about 70-100 feet, coming to rest on the right shoulder of the road over a culvert and between two trees.

Both vehicles sustained disabling damages and were towed from the scene.

Police said charges are pending against Kupres.

• A crash happened at 9:41 p.m. June 19 on Hudson Drive in Packer Township. Injured were Ivan Fuentes, 50, of Pottsville, and Jihan Imbody, 26, of Weatherly, the drivers of the vehicles, and three toddlers, a 1-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, also from Weatherly.

Police said Fuentes was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton, while Imbody and the children were transported to the St. Luke’s Miners Campus, Coaldale, all by Lehighton Ambulance personnel. In all of the cases, police said the extent of their injuries was not known at the time.

Police said the crash was a head-on one in which Fuentes, driving a 2008 Hyundai Sonata southbound, traveled into the oncoming lane and struck a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Imbody. Police said both vehicle sustained disabling damages and were towed from the scene.

They said charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance are pending against Fuentes.

• Esius A. Duque, 19, of Kelayres, was cited after a crash at 11:23 a.m. July 20 on Interstate 81 in Kline Township.

Police said he was driving a 2005 Cadillac north and looked for his cellphone while failing to slow down for a backlog of traffic due to a work zone. The car struck the rear of a 2015 Volvo operated by Eyiry R. Javier Berroa, 42, of Tampa, Florida.

Police said the Cadillac sustained disabling damages and was towed from the scene. The Volvo had minor damages and was driven from the scene.

No one was injured.
