Hazleton Art League to hold new exhibit

Local artist Lizzy Tilley works in multiple disciplines - from painting, to fashion, to quilting and more.

Tilley’s art carries a message: “I’m determined to try to show my fellow humans what paradise can be found here, if we would only SEE it.”

The opening reception for PARADISE FOUND: Revisioning the Garden of Earthly Delights will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday at the Hazleton Art League, located at 31 W. Broad St., Hazleton.

The exhibit will aim to show viewers the urgency of embracing Mother Earth through Tilley’s emotionally charged pieces of black apocalyptic imagery. Accompanying her pieces that depict imagery of dire warning, Tilley dwells in the land of hope and is never far from her flower beds and floral patterned downy comforter quilts which elicits a sense of optimism.

Tilley digs deep into the happy place of her heart that wants to believe in humanity’s ability to reconcile with the environmental stresses that threaten to drastically alter our planet beyond repair. In hopes to lead viewers into seeing and understanding the Genesis “awakening” myth, she makes use of symbolism to depict notions of how feminine curiosity of knowing can open humanity into the boundlessness of our potential and sacred connection with Mother Earth.

A Coffee Talk with the artist is planned for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 1-4 p.m., closed Mondays.

The exhibit runs through Aug. 27.

In addition, the Hazleton Art League Summer Art Camp for children ages 6-14, runs through Aug. 18 with full or half-day sessions.

This summer’s theme is “The Keystone State,” which explores the many facets of Pennsylvania through artistic expression.

The Art League will be featured at the RailRiders v. IronPigs baseball game on Aug. 25. Tickets are available through the Art League website.

Local musicians will play in the main gallery from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27 at Acoustic Jam.
