Lansford sets hearing for church renovation

Lansford Borough Zoning Hearing Board will again take up the request of Mauch Chunk Holdings LLC to open a special events venue at the former St. Michael the Archangel Church on East Abbott Street in the borough Monday.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Business partners George Haleem and Michael Klaips envision a venue where people can celebrate marriages, births, reunions as well as see theatrical, music or comedy performances in the 112-year-old Gothic style church.

The partners also would like to see the adjacent rectory and school as rental units, which could be used in conjunction with the events venue.

The rectory, as a whole house rental, would be suitable for a bridal party, they said, while the school, which could have up to 15 long- or short-term rental apartments, could be used for wedding guests, ideally couples or couples with children.

The zoning board raised concerns about short-term rental, which other communities found problematic, but Haleem and Klaips explained that they have experience with short-term rentals and own historic properties.

The partners last month also passed around photographs of other venues, similar to St. Michael’s Church with its high-vaulted ceiling, to show the board and those attending the hearing what the venue could look like.

Mauch Chunk Holdings bought the church, school and rectory from Ericka Williams-Rodriguez for $100,000. They said they plan to invest $700,000 in the first phase of the project, which included the purchase price.

The board did not make a decision last month, continuing the hearing to give the partners time to provide a formal parking plan for the venue and apartments.

Mauch Chunk Holdings also purchased the parking lots that were part of the church and school property.

Resident Mark Krajcirik, who bought the lots from the Diocese of Allentown, told the board he sold them to the partners, based on what they planned for the properties.

On Monday, Haleem said they are working with an engineering firm on a parking plan for the lots, which should work well for all of the proposed uses and conform to borough ordinances.

“We hope the borough agrees next week,” he said in an email.

Haleem said they also began work to clean out the buildings and to repair the roofs on the structures, which was a priority because of leaks.
