Christmas arrives early at Slatington Moose Lodge

Shoppers had a chance to do some early Christmas shopping at the Slatington Moose Lodge’s first Christmas in July.

The event was in the Moose Lodge along Main Street in the borough, and in its parking lot in the back.

Crafters and other vendors were on hand, selling everything from handmade jewelry, scented wax, holiday crafts and baked goods. Two food trucks were in the parking lot offering gyros, hot dogs, sandwiches, and shish-kabobs.

For Jaclyn Irving and Emily Koch of Slatington, this was their first time at any type of show. They started their business, J Squared Wax on Etsy, this past May, selling homemade scented wax melts.

“I am a mom of four,” Irving said. “I needed something to keep myself busy. I also needed to earn some extra money and have a creative outlet.”

Terri DeAbreu of Catasauqua sold home-baked cookies and other delicious items. DeAbreu started her business, Glitteratti Bakery, about three years ago.

“I spent several years as a nanny, and was always making these things for other people,” DeAbreu said. “I like to bake and cover everything in glitter. I do customized cakes, basically, but I do these kinds of shows, too.”

Jeanne Carnes had a table representing Logan’s Heroes Animal Rescue from East Greenville, near Quakertown. With her was Maya, a dog she adopted about 10 years ago.

“She was one of about 40 dogs rescued the first year that Logan’s Heroes formed,” Carnes said. “She (Maya) jumped out of the van, and I knew that I wanted to adopt her immediately.”

Slatington Chief of Police Greg Winokur was on hand to meet the public.

The Loyal Order of Moose is an international organization of men and women who offer assistance with the young and the elderly. Slatington Moose Lodge 1375 has been in existence since the 1930s.

“This is our first year doing the Christmas in July event,” said Ken Joseph, a trustee with the Slatington Moose Lodge. “We do other events like this throughout the year.”

Longtime Moose member George T. Kern recently received The Pilgrim Degree of Merit from the Loyal Order of Moose.

“It’s the highest honor that can be given to a member of the Moose,” Kern said.

Some of the proceeds are offered to local charitable causes. Part of the proceeds go to the national office of the Moose organization, which helps to fund their two big projects: Mooseheart Child City & School in Chicago which helps children in need with educational and vocational resources, and Moosehaven is a retirement community in Orange Park, Florida.
