Two inmates in the Federal Correctional Institution at Schuylkill were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of possessing contraband in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Deondray LuRon Crayton, 36, and Charles Epps, 26, face federal charges after this week’s indictments.
The indictment against Crayton alleges that on June 21 he was found in possession of a homemade knife, commonly referred to as a “shank,” according to U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam.
The indictment against Epps says that on May 11 he was found in possession of a six-inch piece of plastic sharpened to a point with a cloth handle, also referred to as a “shank,” according to Karam.
The cases were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Special Investigative Services of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luisa Honora Berti is prosecuting the case against Crayton and U.S. Attorney Brian J. Gallagher is prosecuting the case against Epps.
If found guilty of the charges, Crayton and Epps each face a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
