Changes to its garbage contract remain under review in Lehighton.
Several council members voiced frustration that it’s garbage provider, Tamaqua Transfer & Recycling, hasn’t been sticking to the terms of the contract.
Council said they are not following the contracted time of 3 a.m. to clear the business district, bypass and school zones only.
Councilman Donnie Rehrig said that needs to change.
“I think we need to have some kind of (understanding) that they need to adhere to the contract,” Rehrig said. ‘When they’re coming through our alley at 2:30 (a.m.), they’re not adhering to (our contract).”
Council then discussed several potential changes.
“I’m firm on one day (pick up), and 5 a.m.,” said Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky.
Councilman Ryan Saunders added, “I think 5 to 6 (a.m.) is fair.”
It was noted that a pre-bid meeting with potential bidders will be held before a finalized contract being drafted.
The conversation then turned to a potential grant for new recycle cans.
“I think a grant makes more sense,” Saunders said. “I think we should look for the grant.”
Council on a 5-1 vote in November 2020 awarded a three-year contract to Tamaqua Transfer and Recycling in the amount of $1,435,800 from 2021-2023. The company had previously been the borough’s trash hauler.
