Coaldale mayor resigns

Coaldale borough is without a mayor.

Herb Whildin submitted a letter of resignation to council, which was accepted unanimously during Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

Whildin did not attend the meeting.

“Please accept my letter of resignation as mayor of Coaldale due to living outside the Coaldale borough effective immediately upon acceptance,” Whildin wrote in a letter read by council President Angela Krapf.

He noted that he enjoyed serving in the role and working with the police department and council.

Councilwoman Claire Remington’s motion to accept the resignation was seconded by Councilman Jacob Adamitis.

Remington said that people “had been talking about it.”

Last month, residents questioned why Whildin continued to serve as mayor even though he no longer lived in the area.

Over the last few months, he has been absent from meetings. He was at the April meeting, however.

Borough Solicitor Robert Yurchak directed council to notify the Schuylkill County Election Bureau of the resignation.

He said that council can solicit applicants for the position and appoint one within 30 days. Otherwise, the post will be open during the November general election.

Council decided to advertise for applicants.

Whildin’s term expires in about 2½ years.
