Poker run raises money for several causes

It was a poker event that made money ... for a good cause.

Eighty-two motorcyclists took to the roads of Carbon and Schuylkill counties Saturday to raise money in the 14th Annual David F. Formica Memorial Poker Run.

David Formica was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2002 and passed away in 2006 at 15 years old.

His family continues his legacy and has worked to raise funds for cancer research and awareness. Money raised is distributed to David’s charities, according to Pam Formica.

Saturday’s poker run and corresponding fundraising events netted $9,125.

The cyclists rode through such spots as Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, and New Ringgold.

The first poker card was obtained at Annie’s Ice Cream, North Street, Jim Thorpe.

From there, they traveled to the Packerton Old Timers Club, Pine Street, Lehighton; Orioles Nest #183, Lehighton; Knepper’s Inn, West Penn Pike, and ended at the Beaver Run Rod & Gun Club, Stewart Creek Road, Lehighton.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the main one,” Pam Formica said. “Then there’s the Ronald McDonald Camp in Greeley, where the kids go to spend time with their siblings. We provide bags for them for the week. Plus we support the hospital, and his scholarship fund, which awards a scholarship to a senior at the Jim Thorpe Area High School who shows compassion to their fellow students.”

At the Beaver Run Rod & Gun Club, there was a pig roast, a basket raffle, 50/50, and entertainment by Colossal Radio’s “The Doc.”

Sponsors for the Poker Run were: Annie’s Ice Cream, Jim Thorpe; Lehighton Orioles Nest 183, Lehighton; Kneppers Restaurant, New Ringgold; Packerton Old Times Club, Lehighton; and the Beaver Run Rod & Gun Club, Lehighton.

Additional sponsors were Colossal Radio & DJ The Doc; Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank, Jim Thorpe; A.D. Home Inspections, Jim Thorpe; Agentis Kitchen and Bath, Allentown; Southbound Consulting Services, Jim Thorpe; Kresge Electric, Jim Thorpe; Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corp League, Tamaqua; Mauch Chunk Pharmacy, Jim Thorpe; Mauch Chunk 5 & 10, Jim Thorpe; Moya, Jim Thorpe; Marion Hose Bar, Jim Thorpe; Meyers Catering; and Five Star Sealcoating, Jim Thorpe.
