Animal rescues are the focus at festival

Donna and Dave Bissonnette’s story is a prime example why events like the 13th annual Rockin’ Rescue are held.

The Bissonnettes, from Bucks County, rescued Ruger, a 12-year-old Weimaraner, in February.

He had spent about six years in a house with no heat and no electricity, and the last 30 days at the house alone.

“He weighed about 45 or 50 pounds,” Donna said. “You could see every rib, his back bone, just about every bone. He also had what is called a pendulum tumor, which hung down about 10 to 12 inches and weighed almost five pounds.”

Because of untreated ear infections in both ears, Ruger was also deaf.

“It took about 4 to 6 weeks, and he gained about 10 pounds,” Donna said. “Then he was strong enough to have surgery to remove the tumor. He now weighs almost 80 pounds.”

The Bissonnettes have had Weimaraners for 35 years.

“He started out as a foster; but, I knew I was going to keep him,” Donna said. “He’s so good. I have two more dogs at home, and he just fit right in.”

The Rockin’ Rescue festival is held annually and sponsored by the Blue Mountain Animal Rescue Society, with the proceeds dedicated to supporting their projects.

This year it was held at a new location, 1375 Oak Grove Road, just off Route 443, across from Tractor Supply.

There was plenty of food by the Parryville Vol Fire Co, Sis’ BBQ, Kitty Kat Concessions, Christina’s Tacos, Ott’s Concessions, Happy Tummy, and more.

Live entertainment included Jeff Krick Elvis Tribute, an ’80s music trivia contest, Bees Knees, Bugsy’s Evolution, and Pocono Posse.

There were also games for kids and adults, the Kiddie Fun Zone Games, crafters and other vendors, flea market and yard sale, and silent auction.

A rabies clinic, sponsored by Dr. Ben Little Gap Animal Hospital, was held Saturday. Pace-Makers Association of Palmerton had a classic car show during the festival on Saturday.

Sunday’s events were canceled because of the weather. Organizers are hoping to reschedule Sunday’s events for July 23, which will include the Pennsylvania Villagers, plus they need to complete the silent auction, the penny party, and the bakery auction. The location will be posted on the group’s Facebook page, Rockin’ Rescue.
