Walker Township supers award bid for sealing roads

Walker Township supervisors awarded a road sealing contract to a Center Valley company at their meeting this week.

AMS bid $1.98 a square yard, while Martin Paving of Lititz bid $2.12 a square yard. The cost of the contract is $146,474.46.

The supervisors awarding the contract to AMS is pending approval by John Davis, the municipal service representative for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Davis, who helped write the contracts and advertise the bids, will ensure all the paperwork is received.

AMS does not have a start date, but the work must be done by the fall.

The three main roads to be done will be sections of Catawissa Road, Mountain Road, and Valley Road. Two alternate projects to be done will be another section of Valley Road and Shady Lane.

Township workers are putting down asphalt on the project streets to prepare them for the seal coating.

Township Roadmaster Chad Felty reported that the requirement to purchase the contracted minimum amount of salt and anti-skid material has been waived.

“We hadn’t purchase any salt all year,” Felty said. “I had just placed an order for the 180 tons, our minimum for the contract. We have the room for it, and I was told that the price for the new contract will probably be about 6% more than right now.”

The current contract ends the last day of July. Felty expects to have the new contact price by the next meeting.

Work on the basketball and tennis courts at Wildcat Park will be done July 19-21 - weather permitting. The courts will be closed July 18 for pressure washing and to prep work.

Township officials looking for volunteers to help with the project, expected to begin around 8 a.m. each day.

For the summer, the Walker Township office will be by appointment only. Call (570) 668-4603 to make arrangements.
