We must “Never Forget” our fallen heroes from the terroristic attacks of 9/11.
A group of bicycling enthusiasts did their part to ensure that after they embarked on a two-week, 660-mile bike tour from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia.
The trek began on June 20, and wrapped up on Monday, according to Bruce White, event director of the Sept. 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance.
It included road and trail riding, said White, who along with his wife, Vikki, pulled in at the Mahoning Inn along Route 443 in Lehighton around 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The Fredericksburg, Virginia couple said they enjoyed passing through parts of Carbon County.
“Climbing-wise, it was right up there,” White said of the 38 miles they traveled on Friday. “Feeling pretty good right now.”
“We met some wonderful people,” White said. “It’s nice to see that tourism is that prevalent in Jim Thorpe; (and) the Canal path is a jewel.”
Bruce White said one rider, Fred Zelt, rides with the American flag.
The Sept. 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance is a nonprofit organization that is developing a 1,300 mile multipurpose trail connecting the Pentagon Memorial in Washington, D.C., to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, to the Ground Zero Memorial in New York City and back to the Pentagon Memorial in D.C.
“We’ve gotten the thumbs-up,” White said. “It’s kind of heartwarming to see American people still have that much respect for the flag.”
His wife, Vikki White, added that it was nice to see other people along the trail who understood the reason why they took the ride.
Fundraising for the Sept. 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance is the main goal of the statewide tour.
