Nesquehoning Borough Council

Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting on Wednesday.

• Weston Brehm, executive director of Carbon County Housing Authority, approached the board asking if something could be done with regards to fines the authority is receiving over avoidable fire alarms at an apartment building the authority manages. To date, more than $1,400 in fines have been accrued since the beginning of the year and the fines are charged to the authority.

A meeting will take place at a later time to further discuss the matter.

• Mayor Tom Kattner announced that Bulldog Fire Apparatus has donated office chairs to the police department, saving the borough approximately $1,000.

• Council approved purchasing two new computers for two officers that started with the force on July 1. The cost for the computers was $1,800.

• Tabled a request to purchase three additional body cameras for police at a cost of $15,084. It was noted the body cameras already purchased cannot be shared between officers because they are designated a number that corresponds with the officer it was issued to.

• The burn ban was lifted as a result of all the rain recently.

• Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani announced that the borough was working on a draft ordinance regarding fireworks, but said it wasn’t taking people’s rights away to fireworks, rather just better outlining usage in the borough.

• Electronics recycling will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sept. 6 at 50 E. Locust St. Several items are able to be recycled for free, while other items, such as televisions have a fee.

• WNEP meteorologist Joe Snedeker will be bicycling his way through Nesquehoning on July 26 as part of his Go Joe fundraising ride. More details on when he will be in the borough, as well as fundraising efforts will be announced closer to time.
