Jim Thorpe cruises past Freeland

Jim Thorpe’s 10-12-year-old all-stars came out like a house on fire.

It tore through Freeland impressively, making all the plays and taking advantage of every opportunity to build a commanding lead.

Freeland tried to make it interesting, but Thorpe had enough fuel left in the tank to post a 14-7 victory in a District 18 tournament Little League game on Wednesday.

Weather had twice put the damper on the junior Olympians bid to make their tournament début before Mother Nature finally cooperated.

“We finally got it in,” Thorpe manager Bob Levins said. “We’ve been ready to play the last couple of days, so it was nice to finally get a chance.”

Thorpe’s offense showed no ill effects from the earlier postponements as it exploded for five runs first inning - and scored in every at bat during the game.

In the first, JT’s big hits were doubles off the bats of Bob Levins and Parker Grant.

The Olympians pushed across two more runs in the second as Levins smoked his second double of the game and came around to score on an error. Kade Levan also scored after drawing a walk.

It was looking like it might be a short, mercy-rule evening after Jim Thorpe pushed its lead to 9-0 in the third. Grant picked up his second RBI with a double that plated Bryce McElmoyle, who had reached on an error. Grant would later score on a Levins single - his third hit in the first three innings.

Up to that point, it had been the Kade Levan show on the mound. Thorpe’s hard-throwing righthander looked untouchable during the first two innings.

But in the bottom of the third, Jim Thorpe got shaky in the field and Freeland took advantage to score four times on only one hit - a two-run single by Matty Myers.

But Freeland never got any closer as Jim Thorpe kept adding to its run total.

Thorpe scored two more runs in the top of the fourth as Blake Skrimcovsky and Grant both delivered big hits. In the fifth, Ben Remmel singled home a run to make it 12-4. In the sixth, an error and an RBI single off the bat of McElmoyle produced the final two JT runs.

Freeland used four walks, and a two-run single from Mason Prussack, to set the final numbers.

PITCHING NUMBERS… Levan was at the top of his game on the bump in the first inning, striking out two and also throwing out Myers from his knees on a grounder back to the box. Levan finished with eight strikeouts before running out of pitches. He tossed a nifty one-hitter. Levins finished out the game in relief.

BIG BATS … Grant and Levins were the big bats in Thorpe’s lineup. Grant had two doubles and three RBIs, while Levins also doubled twice and added a single.

UP NEXT ... Thorpe will host Towamensing in a winner’s bracket semifinal on Friday. Freeland drops to the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament and will be at Tamaqua tonight,
