Polk to hold hearing on solar panel plans
Polk Township will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Monday, July 17 at the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company to discuss Effort Solar’s conditional use request.
“We anticipate a large crowd. There are lots of neighbors who adjoin the property. They can voice their opinions for and against it,” said Michael Hurley, vice chairman, during Monday’s supervisors meeting.
The property is located on Long Mountain Road near Bear Road. There are no solar panels there yet. The property is partly in Polk Township and partly in Chestnuthill Township.
The Polk planning commission will look at these plans from Effort Solar, which is based in Oceanside City, California, on July 10, said chairman Brian Ahner.
Claudio T. Stabile, who is working on his Eagle Scout project, also wanted to talk about the sun and the stars during the public comment portion. He is building an observatory in the North Field, next to the Polk Township municipal building on Township Road.
“I invite everyone to bring your curiosity and generosity to my final Star Party Fundraiser this Thursday at 8:30 p.m.,” he said.
This month, he planned to hold two parties in the afternoon to view the sun and two parties in the evening to view the night sky. However, the stormy weather canceled an afternoon and an evening event.
He raised $360 at his first event on June 10.
Despite the rain outs, he has surpassed his fundraising goal of $3,000.
He raised money through a GoFundMe account, by selling various items including his mother’s base guitar at the Blue Ridge Flea Market, and sponsorships.
“I have raised 3,425.74,” he said.
He asked the supervisors for approval to purchase security equipment with the extra money he raised; if his Boy Scout Troop 102 of Saylorsburg could camp at the site on Aug. 18 during his grand opening; and for a key to the building where his materials will be stored until his observatory is complete.
“You did a great job,” said supervisor Carl Heckman as he asked for his colleagues to vote on the requests.
They voted 3-0 to all his requests and to waive any additional fees.
“If we’re going to have an astronomy club in the future, we’ll need to look into insurance,” Heckman said.
In other business:
• Supervisors voted to have their bank write a letter to release funds to The Woods developer. The development, located on Haney Road, is in phase 4.
• Supervisors continued their efforts to establish a food truck fee, but did not make a decision. Heckman wants the resolution to be “once and done.” Ahner said they can look a little more at other municipalities’ fees and then decide. Some places have fees per event, and others have an annual fee with various stipulations.
