Monroe officials recognize Eagle Scouts

The Monroe County commissioners applauded the efforts of two Eagle Scout recipients at their meeting on Wednesday.

Michael Rodriguez was on hand to accept an Eagle Scout certificate from the commissioners. He received his Eagle Scout award on June 4.

Sharon Laverdure, chairwoman of the commissioners, asked Rodriguez to tell them about his project.

Rodriguez said his Eagle Scout project was a pergola for older adults.

“During the summer, we know it gets really hot. Some of the senior citizens want to walk around and enjoy the weather,” he said.

Rodriguez said they are concerned about getting sunburned and getting too hot.

“Without any kind of shade or protection, they stay inside and not enjoy the day,” he said. “So I went and got a pergola kit and built it up from basically scratch.”

Rodriguez said his project also included refurbishing three picnic tables to give them an area to eat.

“That was really it. It took a while, but we got there,” he said.

Laverdure asked where the pergola is located.

Rodriguez said the Pocono Services for Families and Children at their Mountain Center in Tobyhanna. They also have locations at the East Stroudsburg Center and the Yes (Youth Empowerment Services) Center in Tannersville.

“Thank you for that,” she said.

“Michael, I applaud your efforts,” said Commissioner John Christy.

He said he also participated in Scouting, but didn’t continue to the level of Eagle Scout.

“I keep thinking, ‘why didn’t I go the extra mile to do what you’ve done,’ so I congratulate you whole heartedly,” Christy said and asked what his plans are for the future.

Rodriguez said he plans to attend college to get a degree in mechanical engineering.

The commissioners also approved a proclamation for Brian O’Neil for receiving his Eagle Scout award. O’Neil received his award on June 20.
