Woman admits using church credit card for personal purchases

A Lehighton woman faces theft charges after using a church’s credit card for personal purchases, including Carrie Underwood concert tickets.

Lynn Rehrig, 57, of Dieters Hill Road, was arraigned by District Judge Casimir Kosciolek on charges of theft by unlawful taking and access device fraud on June 16, and released on $3,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing on the charges is scheduled June 28.

According to court papers, the Rev. Anthony Pagotto, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church told Mahoning Township police that an audit of the church financial book turned up suspicious transactions between Nov. 21, 2020 and Oct. 20, 2021.

The transactions were on a credit card issued to Rehrig, who was the financial secretary of the church until being placed on administrative leave in November, court papers said.

Pagotto asked Rehrig about the transactions, and she admitted to using the church’s credit card for personal purchases. She resigned from her position in December.

Police interviewed Rehrig in January and she admitted using the card for personal purchases, but could not remember all the purchases, court papers said.

She did admit to using the card for purchases at JCPenney’s orders, Amazon, Carrie Underwood concert tickets and Sight and Sound Theatre, court papers said.

There were a total of 30 unauthorized transactions worth $2,870.48 on the card.
