Schuylkill gets tax money for former motel

Schuylkill County finally has the money owed by a hospitality company on a fire ravaged former motel on Route 61 in Schuylkill Haven.

County Treasurer Linda L. Yeich on Wednesday told commissioners that she received a $31,000 check from the property settlement.

“We got $26,338 in hotel tax, which is 117 months, from March of 2007 through December 2015, from the date of the first fire. We also collected $4,662, which was 6 percent statutory interest on our judgment, and that money will be going into the county’s general fund,” Yeich said.

She thanked commissioners for working with her office and taking the actions needed to bring the matter to conclusion.

“We’re going to be satisfying the judgment that was filed,” she said.

The former Days Inn, at 1476 Route 61, was owned by Seven Hills Hospitality, which bought it for $1,164,000 in 2007.

The company owed $47,500 in back hotel taxes. The county took Seven Hills to court in April 2019 filing a municipal claim for the back hotel tax. Yeich said earlier the company was up to date on its property taxes.

In February, the county planned to take Seven Hills to court to recoup the cash.

In May, according to county real estate records, Seven Hills sold the property to MBC Carlisle LP, affiliated with Miller Brothers Construction, Schuylkill Haven, for $600,000.

The long vacant motel, frequently occupied by homeless people, was hit twice by fire, most recently in March 2019. That blaze was determined to have been deliberately set.
