LV falls in Carpenter Cup quarters
Lehigh Valley’s run in the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic came to a close in the quarterfinals on Tuesday in Philadelphia.
The LV squad rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon held on for a 12-9 win.
Kate Yadush started the rally with a single to score Ariana Castillo, who doubled, to trim the deficit to 12-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Palmerton’s Carly Gaffney added a double to score Yadush and H. Pyle, who singled, to make it 12-5, still with no outs.
After a two-out error allowed Gaffney to advance to third and Addison Sabo to reach, Brianna Amey delivered a single to score Gaffney and move Sabo to second base.
Palmerton’s Sydney Frantz followed and drew a walk to load the bases, and Castillo cashed in with a single to plate Sabo and make it 12-7 while also keeping the bases loaded.
Yadush came up next and delivered for the second time in the inning, coming up with a single to score Amey and Frantz to make it 12-9 and advance Castillo to second base.
But Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon ended the threat when Giana Miranda got a pop up to second baseman Ali Williams to seal the win.
Trailing 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Yadush put Lehigh Valley on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Amey. Gaffney delivered a two-out single to score Frantz, who singled, to make it 10-2.
Frantz finished the contest 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Gaffney was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Gaffney also pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out one.
Castillo went 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Yadush was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Northwestern’s Sage Toman went 1-for-3.
Williams was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored for Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon, which pushed across six runs in the top of the third inning. Miranda (2-for-4, RBI, run scored) and Madelynn Mackison (run scored) also tripled,
The teams combined for 32 hits in the contest, with each recording 16.
Berks/LL’s run would come to an end in the semifinals with an 8-1 loss to Jersey Shore.
Lehigh Valley opened the tournament with a 3-0 start on Tuesday.
LV opened the tournament with 17 hits and a 10-5 victory over Inter-Ac. Their second contest of the day resulted in a 12-4 victory over Olympic Colonial, and was a 7-5 winner over Burlington in its third of three games after trailing early.
