Franklin OKs communications board

A Lehighton business owner pitched a plan to put up communication boards at Phifer’s Ice Dam Park to the Franklin Township supervisors at Tuesday’s meeting.

Kristin Ellis, owner of Time 2 Talk Therapy Bridge Street, Lehighton, asked the supervisors for approval for the boards.

“A lot of our families have talked to us about local playgrounds where there’s not a lot of ability for these kids to communicate with the other kids that are on the playground,” Ellis said. “What my company would like to do is place communication boards into the local playgrounds to allow the kids that are limited or nonverbal to be able to communicate with their peers that are verbal.”

A communication board provides a variety of graphic illustration that kids can use to communicate what they want to say. These boards are used in hospitals, therapy rooms, resident care facilities, and private homes.

“We service eight counties across Pennsylvania, but we are looking to start locally,” Ellis said, adding that they already received approval from the Borough of Lehighton to place one at the Baer Memorial Swimming Pool and the Community Grove.

Ellis asked some local printing companies, and they can produce several communication boards for $495. They money will be provided by Time 2 Talk Therapy along with other businesses and some of their clients who donate funds for the boards.

Township supervisors passed a motion to approve the request from Time 2 Talk Therapy Services LLC to place a communication board at Phifer’s Ice Dam Park.

In another matter, supervisors approved Pipe Data View Services to provide labor and equipment to televise approximately 1,900 feet of 8-inch sanitary lines as directed regarding the shared sewers in Weissport.
