R. Newton Davenport, supervisor of special education in Carbon County, last night was appointed assistant superintendent of county schools at a meeting of the Carbon County School Board held in Jim Thorpe.
He succeeds Nan Jenkins, whose retirement is effective June 30.
A native of Wilkes- Barre, Davenport taught at Meyers High School in that city before becoming a special-education teacher in Carbon and Northampton counties in 1941.
A resident of Weir Lake, he is a graduate of Lafayette College, Easton, and did postgraduate work at the Pennsylvania State University. He is an Army veteran of World War II.
