Police: Woman driving stolen car crashes into 4 vehicles, mailbox
A New York woman crashed a stolen car into four vehicles and a U.S. Postal Service mailbox in Beaver Meadows following a police pursuit Saturday afternoon.
Hazleton City police received a notification at 3:31 p.m. from the Flock Camera System, a license plate reading system that monitors traffic in the city, regarding a stolen Pennsylvania registration on a silver Nissan Sentra.
Officers confirmed the plate was stolen through the Luzerne County Communications Center, and observed the vehicle traveling east on Broad Street in Hazleton.
The driver, later identified as Amy R. Gancio of Walton, New York, began to drive erratically when officers got behind the vehicle, police said.
Officers activated emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop, when Gancio fled at a high rate of speed, police said.
Officers pursued Gancio into Beaver Meadows, where she crashed into four vehicles and a mailbox along Route 93 in front of the post office. One of the vehicles was occupied, police said.
Gancio was taken into custody and transported to Hazleton City Hall, where it was determined that both the vehicle and registration were reported stolen out of New York state, police said.
Officers found narcotics and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.
Gancio was charged with fleeing and eluding police, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, as well as numerous traffic violations.
She was arraigned by District Judge Joseph D. Spagnuolo Jr. in Plains Township, Luzerne County, and committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre in lieu of $30,000 bail.
An ambulance was on the scene of the crash, but police did not say if anyone was injured.
