Work to repair the railroad crossing near the Five Points intersection in Tamaqua was put on hold Monday because of rain.
The Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad started work on the West Broad Street crossing at 7 a.m. today.
The railroad will remove the damaged concrete panels around the tracks and pave the crossing.
“We’ve been getting complaints about it for quite a while,” said Kevin Steigerwalt, Tamaqua borough manager. “The concrete pads are starting to break apart, and the metal edges around them are starting to come loose and break apart.”
Steigerwalt said the crossing sees quite a bit of traffic.
“It has been taking a beating,” he said.
Tamaqua borough crews will pave the area once the railroad removes the concrete, Steigerwalt said. Work could take two days to complete.
Traffic on West Broad Street will be restricted to one lane, and the entire road may be closed for periods of time to accommodate construction.
Drivers traveling on routes 209 and 309 in Tamaqua between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. should expect delays and allow for additional travel time.
