Monroe Co. honors longtime employee

The Monroe County commissioners presented a Certificate of Special Recognition to an employee Wednesday morning to honor her years of service.

Wendy Bentzoni Serfass has been with the county for 31 years. She started off her career in the prothonotary’s office in 1992, and later moved to the Sheriff’s Office eventually becoming a deputy sheriff.

Serfass then went to work in the District Attorney’s office and is retiring as a detective sergeant. Her last day on the job was Friday.

“I’m looking forward to retiring,” Serfass said. “I’m sad to leave Mike, but I’m leaving him in capable hands.”

First Assistant District Attorney Mike Mancuso said he was saddened to receive her resignation, but happy for her, too.

“Wendy has been my right-hand person for many years, since the LaBar case,” he said. The case involved the kidnapping of a Monroe County woman by Jason LaBar, who is serving 20 years for the crime.

Mancuso said they worked in sync in preparing for that case.

Serfass has been at the District Attorney’s Office for 17 years.

“I stayed there, and I’ve had a fantastic career,” she said.

Sharon Laverdure, chairman of the commissioners, read the certificate honoring Serfass.

“I’m really glad to see Wendy with us,” she said. Sometimes, the person being honored isn’t able to be at the commissioners’ meeting.

Everyone wished her well in this new stage of her life.
