SUV plunges down 50-foot embankment

Serious injuries were averted when an SUV plunged down a 50-foot embankment off the Mile Hill (Route 309) in Kline Township at 4:31 a.m. May 23.

State police at the Frackville barracks said Alex Garcia Velazquez, 53, of Reading, was driving the 2007 Ford Escape southbound when he lost control of it around a right curve. Police said he overcorrected but the car continued southeast across the northbound lane and traveled through a guide rail before plunging down the embankment.

Garcia Velazquez was uninjured, but a passenger, David A. Flores-Sosa, 42, of Temple, was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton.

Police said the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Garcia Velazquez was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.
