May 12, 1979 - Barry Eckhart wins three events and is part of a winning relay squad to help the Slatington boys capture the team title at the annual Centennial League track & field championships. Eckhart breaks the tape in the 800, 1600 and 3200 and joins with Mike Gaston, Terry Schuck and Duane Beers to take the 3200 relay. The Bulldogs, coached by Marv Miller, also receive a first from Todd Messinger in the high jump. Palmerton’s Mark Shupp posts three individual wins, claiming the 400, long jump and triple jump. Shupp adds a fourth gold in the 1600 relay, teaming with Dave Conners, John Andrews and Jim Andrews. Northwestern’s Chuck Koenig (shot put) and Pleasant Valley’s Charles Conklin (pole vault) also earn gold medals.
