Bears bounced from EPC playoffs
OREFIELD – It wasn’t the kind of start the Pleasant Valley baseball team needed in the opening round of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference baseball tournament.
You can’t give a program-school like Parkland six-extra outs and expect to stay with this big dog for any length of time.
The Bears did exactly that Thursday and paid for it.
Top-seeded Parkland scored early and often as it pounced all over the eighth-seeded Bears for an 11-1 five-inning victory.
The Trojan offense was basic - nothing fancy - which is just the way Parkland manager Kurt Weber likes it.
“We like to put pressure on the other team, and if it means bunt the ball, we’ll do that,” the successful skipper said.
The Trojans can lace it too if need be. They scalded three extra-base hits - two doubles and a triple - with the last hit ending the game, as Mike Cole drilled a fastball to deep center field chasing Will Dobil home with the final run of the contest.
Prior to that, Parkland showed it was going for the juggler in the opening inning as it scored six runs - four of them unearned.
The Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate in racing off to the commanding early lead. Dobil and Cole both delivered hits to open the home first. After Bo Barthol walked, Matt Razzis chased home a run with a single. Another walk, three throwing errors, and Gavin Mohry’s hit capped the huge first inning. “We talked about coming down here and being competitive. We wanted to make the routine plays defensively, and put the ball in play offensively,” said Pleasant Valley assistant coach Joe Anderton. “We kind of surprised some people (qualifying for the playoffs). Nobody expected us to be here.
“We wanted to come down here and compete (with them). But Parkland is a very good team.”
Parkland used a one-out triple from Barthol, and an RBI-ground out to make it 7-0 in the second inning.
Pleasant Valley broke through for its only run in the top of the third when Nate Loch singled, swiped second, and eventually scored after a Parkland miscue.
Parkland added three runs in the fourth, combining a pair of hits and three more PV errors.
The winners ended it by way of the mercy-rule in the fifth when Cole walked and Barthol tripled him home.
BY THE NUMBERS … Owen DeLong picked up the win on the bump for the Trojans. He allowed six hits, struck out two and walked two. DeLong threw 61 pitches - 40 in the strike zone. Ben Mostosky started and took the loss for the Bears.
AT THE DISH … Parkland had 10 hits, with Barthol leading the way with two triples. Louis Inserra doubled, as did Cole. For Pleasant Valley, Loch and Kole Henry each had two hits apiece, while John Smale and Ben Mostosky both added singles.
